I’m reminded of Arthur Nikisch’s classic description of the quiet trumpet notes towards the end of the second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony: “It’s as if someone were knocking on my coffin.”

SOYER I’ll accept the imagery; there’s no question of this music’s very serious nature.

You create such a sinister atmosphere with the pizzicatos in this movement that I can only take comfort in the knowledge that you are in fact a most affable person. I have to remind myself, “He’s really gentle as a lamb.”

SOYER Well, that proves my point that cellists shouldn’t despair when confronted with pages of ordinary-looking bass notes. We have the power to transform ourselves from lambs into wolves, and back into lambs again.
